How does the immune system work?

10 Apr 2023

The immune system is one of the most important mechanisms our body has to protect us from infections and diseases. This system is responsible for detecting and eliminating any foreign agent, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi, that can cause damage to our body.

Through a combination of physical and chemical barriers, specialized cells and molecules, and an immune memory, the immune system is able to keep us safe and healthy. In this article, we are going to delve into how the immune system works and how this system is responsible for protecting us day to day.

The immune system

It is a set of mechanisms and structures in the body that work together to protect it from foreign agents, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.

These agents are known as antigens and the goal of the immune system is to detect and destroy them before they can cause harm.

Our body's defense system is divided into two types: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.

  1. The innate immune system is the first to respond to infection and is made up of physical and chemical barriers, such as the skin and mucosa, as well as specialized cells and molecules called phagocytes and cytokines. These cells and molecules are able to detect and eliminate invaders with little or no additional help.

  1. The adaptive immune system , also known as the specific immune system, comes into action once the innate immune system has been overcome. This system is made up of specialized cells called lymphocytes, which are divided into two types: T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. T lymphocytes help coordinate the immune response, while B lymphocytes produce specific antibodies that bind to antigens and help destroy them.

The immune system also has an immune memory, which allows it to quickly recognize and respond to antigens it has seen before. This is what allows vaccines to be effective, as they stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies and specific cells against a specific antigen, without causing the disease.

In short, the immune system is a complex defense system that works to protect the body from infections and diseases. Composed of various structures and mechanisms, including physical and chemical barriers, specialized cells and molecules, and an immune memory, the immune system is a constant and effective defense against foreign agents.
